A league tournament is a competition consisting of at least three individuals as competitors. In a broader view, it comprises a collection of teams coming together in a scheduled competition for an overall reward or price. The latter definition usually results in the formation of sub-units and sub-divisions. This formation gives a suitable structure that allows competitors to rank their different skill sets and degrees of performance. This formation can be seen like in the case of the league of legend tournament.
The tournament was first introduced in the 12th and 16th centuries, i.e., the middle age, employed mainly for chivalrous purposes and mock fights for entertainment by the royalties and nobilities of the time.
League tournaments exist in various forms and types. For distinct sports and games, the organisers introduce diverse league structures. The type of tournament is mainly based on what the organisers want to achieve. Some may employ simple methods, while others may introduce complex forms to get what they want. However, whatever structure of league tournament used should be worth the purpose.
The nine types of league tournaments are –
Regarded as the simplest league structure, it lasts for a short period, and this tournament structure is robust for many candidates. When the first round is over, the winners move on to the next rounds. The loser is eliminated as well. This goes on until the last man standing, the champion, emerges victorious. It’s the fastest way to eliminate players, as all players are given equal opportunities to perform just once.
This form of league tournament provides an opportunity for double elimination, just as the name implies. With such flexibility, players are allowed to enrol on double entries. Therefore, if a player performed poorly in the first game, there’s a second chance before elimination or moving onto the next levels of the tournament.
The multi-level tournament structure is the most adapted for physical education classes and recreational setup. There’s little or no to the elimination of players in this type. Players gain more benefits and have more preparedness to push forward to the final levels. When players lose, they step down to a few levels behind and push forward to the next levels to meet all the challenges.
This schedule is fixed and provides an equal number of entries for players involved. It doesn’t have many locations. However, there is a number of entries; therefore, the number of enlisted players can’t fit into it. Many entries will choose a different format, robust enough to fit such requirements.
This is when there are more entries that the straight round-robin cannot handle. The round-robin double split requires that there be a double split. This league format will split the entries into two divisions. The final player from each will have a play-off, where the overall winner is determined.
Very similar to the double-elimination league. This type is an alternative for double elimination where many entries are scheduled.
This tournament format is used when there’s an increased number of entries. This robust format splits the entries four ways.
The semi-round robin tournament corrects the lapses of uneven distribution of chances for the enrolled entries.
This setup resembles that of pyramids and ladders. This format can be used where the period or has a longer duration. It’s prevalent in the Racket club and Intramural settings.
A league tournament has proven to be a defined structure suitable for arranging gaming or sporting activities. Many sports and game organisers have recognised the importance of adopting various tournament formations, which will enable the extension of the game for larger entries. Many players can now come in to partake in several types of competitions. It also promises the equality of game distribution among players, where all players play fair and are judged according to the game’s rules. In addition, game organisers will need to consider other preliminary basic requirements like; the need for facilities and officials. These all add up to achieve a well-structured and more defined gaming setup.
