Different state High Courts conduct the Judiciary Service Examination annually to fill the various posts lying vacant in the department. The examination is conducted to appoint Civil Judge, District Magistrate, and Additional District Magistrate. Although the candidates appearing for these examinations are experienced and know their subject well but they do have to prepare well for the examination. It should be understood that no exam is easy or difficult to crack. It depends on the integrity and diligence of the candidate and how he/she tackles it.
Stages of Judicial Services Examination
The stages are mentioned below:
- Judicial Services Examination – Preliminary
The preliminary examination comprises of objective-type questions. It is akin to a screening test that shifts out eligible candidates for the Main Examination. The marks secured in this exam are not carried over for the final selection.
- Judicial Services Examination – Mains
The Mains exam is the second stage of the recruitment process. It is subjective in nature. There are 3 to 4 papers to be attempted. The marks scored in the mains are considered for final selection.
- Judicial Services Examination – Interview
The interview round is the final stage of the selection procedure. During the interview, the candidates are assessed on the basis of their personality, integrity, intelligence, values, and other factors and are selected according to Merit.

Effective Strategies to Ace State Judiciary Exams
Understand the Exam Pattern:
Familiarize yourself with the exam pattern, syllabus, and marking scheme. Analyze previous year papers to identify important topics and question patterns.
Create a Study Plan:
Develop a structured study plan that covers all subjects and allows for regular practice and revision. Allocate sufficient time for each topic and prioritize based on your strengths and weaknesses.
Study Material and Resources:
Gather reliable study materials, including textbooks, reference books, and online resources. Make use of legal databases, case studies, and judgments to enhance your understanding of legal concepts.
Time Management:
Manage your time effectively by setting realistic study targets. Break down the syllabus into manageable sections and allocate specific time slots for each. Practice time-bound mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.
Mock Tests and Practice Papers:
Regularly solve mock tests and practice papers to assess your preparation level and identify areas for improvement. Analyze your performance, review incorrect answers, and work on weak areas to enhance your overall score.
Conclusion
In total 24 states in India conduct the JSE. As stated above, it is not an easy exam to crack. Even after reaching the merit list, the candidates have to join the respective state judicial Academy for training.
