A Brief Trivia about Goa

Goa is the only place in India that fulfils the bucket list of almost everyone. It has beaches, worship places, and many tourist attractions that make it unique.

Goa is the smallest state in the country. It is on the southwest coast of India, located on the western ghats. On May 30th, 1987, Goa declared an independent state of India. Panaji is its capital city. Pramod Sawant is the current chief minister of the state.  

Goa is known for its pristine beaches, temples, churches, architectural marvels, popular markets, seafood, and forests, all of which come under the bucket list of every tourist visiting the state. Moreover, Indian tourism arranges vibrant festivals and carnivals for tourists and youth to enjoy.

  • Forests cover about a third of the entire Goa. More than 60 per cent of the state is under a canopy shed. It is home to rare flora and fauna as well. The forests in the state hold immense biodiversity within them.  
  • Many sanctuaries and wildlife parks hold different breeds and kinds of plants and animals. The Mahavir wildlife sanctuary, Cotigao wildlife sanctuary and the Salim Ali bird sanctuary are some of the must-visit places for all tourists visiting this state. Sometimes rare birds and animals can also be spotted.
  • Goa is the smallest state in the Indian subcontinent. It is slightly larger than Devon but covers an area of about 1249 square miles. It has a coastline stretching for about 99 miles.
  • Because of the booming and overwhelming tourist industry, the per capita income of Goa is also huge. That is why it is often regarded as the tourist capital of India.
  • The Portuguese captain Vasco Da Gama landed in Goa in 1524. Since then, the Portuguese have ruled over Goa for almost 450 years. 
  • Goa is the only state that celebrates two independence days. It celebrated its independence from Portuguese rule on 19th December 1961 and shared its independence with the country from British rule on 15th august 1947. 
  • It is home to India’s one of the largest waterfalls – the Dudhsagar falls or the sea of milk. The height of the Dudhsagar is 603 m.
  • Geologists claim that some of the oldest rocks can be found in this state. The rocks here can be traced back to the Stone Age and are about 6300 million years old. 
  • Goa has an astounding 7000 bars or more, all of which are licensed to serve alcohol.
  • There is the non-decomposing body of St. Francis Xavier. The body is enshrined in a glass casing and displayed in the Basilica of Bom Jesus from time to time.
  • The mineral exports of Goa are one of the highest in the country. The most abundant is laterite stone. Today, bauxite, limestone, magnesia and clay are additions to the mineral ore exports.
  • Asia’s only naval museum is situated in this state. The museum demonstrates the history of our country’s naval aviation.
  • The first medical school in India was established in Goa. It was built by the Portuguese during their time of rule.
  • The first English medium school was also set up in Goa. 
  • The kadambas ruled Goa for many years. During their time, Goa was a state of prosperity. It was a golden era for the people of that state. During their reign, several temples were established.
  • The country’s first printing press was established in Goa. The Portuguese, upon their arrival, brought all the machines and equipment with them.
  • Goa has the largest floating casino in the country. The Big Daddy Casino spans over 50,000 sq. ft and has about 100 tables. 
  • Goa has often been termed the beach capital of India because of the beautiful beaches throughout the state. Goa is divided into two locales mainly – north Goa which is regarded as the party spot, and south goa which is filled with tranquillity. Some top-rated beaches like Calangute, Anjuna, Baga, Candolim, Morjim, Vagator, Chapora come under North Goa, Palolem, Benaulim, Bogmalo, Agonda, Colva, butterfly beach come under south Goa. 
  • Goa is one of the most secular states in India. People from different faiths reside peacefully in Goa and celebrate their festivals harmoniously without any disputes. 
  • Goa is home to many markets. However, the most popular is the Anjuna market. These markets are known for their abundance of spices like black pepper, cloves, and cardamom, to name a few.
