Ans :The East India Company developed this school of painting as they gained control of the Indian subcontinent in the eighteenth century. They trained Indian artists to combine Indian and Western elements and thus, a new style of painting emerged. In Calcutta,  Lord Impey (Chief justice of the High Court) and Lord Wellesley (Governor General) were the most important patrons.
