What causes periodic motion?

Ans: Newton’s law of inertia is applied here. Every body moves in a straight line until an external force is applied. This is applicable for bodies in periodic motion too. Once a pendulum is moved from its resting position, it continues to move until an external force is applied to stop the movement.
