Key Economic Comparison (2025 Projections):
| Country | Total GDP (US$ Billion) | GDP per Capita (US$) |
| India | $4,187 | ~12 times lower than Japan |
| Japan | Slightly lower than India | ~12 times higher than India |
| Poland | ~4 times smaller than India | ~9 times higher than India |
What is GDP and Why Rankings Can Mislead?
- Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of goods and services produced by a country.
- At market exchange rates, India’s GDP looks impressive. But this method is volatile and ignores differences in cost of living.
- Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) adjusts GDP to reflect local prices. At PPP rates, India has been the 3rd largest economy since 2009, but this doesn’t mean Indians are wealthier.
Why Size ≠Prosperity:
- Per capita GDP of India in 2024 was $2,711, ranking 144th (market exchange rate) and 127th (PPP terms) among 196 countries.
- Countries like Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan have higher per capita income despite smaller economies.
- Low wages, informal employment, and large income disparities weaken real living standards
Human Development and Social Indicators:
| Indicator | India (2023) | Poland (2023) | Japan (2023) |
| Workforce in Agriculture (%) | 45% | <10% | <10% |
| Wage/Salaried Workers (Formal Jobs) | 23.9% | 80.1% | 91% |
| College Gross Enrolment Ratio (%) | 32.7% | ~75% | ~65% |
| Life Expectancy (Years) | 72 | 78.5 | 84 |
| Infant Mortality Rate (per 1,000 births) | 24.5 | <5 | <5 |
| Human Development Index (HDI) | 0.685 (Medium) | >0.9 (Very High) | >0.9 (Very High) |
- India is projected by the IMF to become the world’s 4th largest economy by GDP in 2025, overtaking Japan. However, indicators like per capita income, health, and education reveal continuing developmental challenges.
