Think of a fielder in a cricket field who collects the ball (that might be hitting the boundary) and aims towards the wicketkeeper and throws back to him with a certain speed and direction. If either the speed or direction was incorrect, the ball would not reach the wicketkeeper. Such quantities in Physics that have magnitude and direction are called vectors. So in this case, speed and direction of the ball gave you the velocity vector. On the other hand there are quantities like mass or time that do not have any direction and in fact, direction plays no meaningful role when they are used.
