precious is derived from a latin root pretiosus which means costly and valuable. Definitely your doubt is genuine but it is very much important to know the etymology of different words. That's why it is always suggested to learn roots of max words to avoid confusion. for eg- theology: theo is root means god and logy means study which is also a root. But logy is derived from a latin root logos. we never use roots as it is. They are always derived either from latin/greek etc.
