Transformer is an AC stationary device used to convert high voltage to low voltage and vice versa. This lesson gives a glance at the principle of the transformer. The lesson also explains the scope of transformers in electrical engineering. Transformers are the most important part of power system.

Overview of the Course

The construction of transformer is focused on minimizing the losses in the transformer. The magnetic and electric loading of a transformer are different for every transformer and depends on type, use, KVA rating etc. This lesson will give you brief description about the procedure of transformer construction.

Construction of Transformer

Faraday's law states that if a coil of conducting material links with a changing flux i.e. alternating flux in case of AC supply, then an emf is induced in the coil which opposes the main AC supply and is directly proportional to the rate of change of flux and no of turns of coil. 
    The transformer carries the task of changing the magnitude of voltage to a desired value.

Principle of Transformer

The lesson gives brief review of calculating the values of current which in vector(phasor) form. Transformation of value of secondary current to primary is very important.

Transformer Characteristics

Open circuit test is used to determine iron losses in the transformer. Short circuit test gives the value of copper losses in the transformer. By performing both the tests we can find out efficiency of a particular transformer. It is the cheapest way to find out efficiency of transformer.

It is brief opening to the vast subject of instrument transformer. In this lesson I have covered the basic idea of using instrument transformer and it's importance.
