Course Overview

This lesson introduces the basic concepts involved in thermodynamics and what's on the surface of the ocean of thermodynamics. These concepts form a concrete foundation to understand what's deep in the ocean of thermodynamics.

Introduction and Basic Concepts

This lesson first introduces to the zeroth law of thermodynamics and then talks about different forms of energy and energy transfers in closed systems. We'll then associate these ways of energy transfers to the first law of thermodynamics, which is basically, applying the law of conservation of energy to the closed systems. We'll also look at some important sign conventions.

General Energy Analysis and Introduction to the First Law of Thermodynamics

(While we were discussing the isochoric process, I have said by mistake that dQ = dW, instead of dQ = dU. Although, in the slides, the latter one was present, it was my bad. I'm sorry for that.)
We will look at the application of the first law of thermodynamics over various processes that come under the category of closed systems. By the way, an assumption we'll make is that, all these processes are quasi-static. A quasi-static process is a process in which the process is carried out in such a way that it remains in internal equilibrium at each and every point of the path. We'll also later look that this kind of process paves a way to reversible paths.

Energy Analysis of Closed Systems

While discussion about work done in the case of adiabatic process, the formula (P2*V2 -P1*V1)/n-1 is for the WORK DONE ON THE GAS. THE WORK DONE BY THE GAS WOULD BE TGE NEGATIVE OF TGE ABOVE EXPRESSION. We are going to look at specific heats, define them and look at their correspondence to the different closed system processes which we have looked at. We are also going to look at the notion of enthalpy in thermodynamics.

Specific Heats and Enthalpy

This is the first part of the analysis of open systems and control volume. We are going to look at mass flow rates and volume flow rates and a simple example illustrating them.

Open Systems and Control Volumes Part 1

This is the second part of analysis of open systems and control volumes. We are going to mathematically establish the principle of conservation of energy for control volumes.

Open Systems and Control Volumes Part 2

(In one of the places, I said it by mistake that rho1*A1*v1 = rho2*A2*v2 is explicitly applied for an incompressible flow. So CORRECT IT TO BE COMPRESSIBLE. Although it is true even for incompressible flows, it is not explicitly used and we instead use A*V = constant, as for an incompressible flow, density remains constant. )We are going to finally look at the mass balance equation for control volumes for steady and unsteady flow with illustrated examples.

Open Systems and Control Volumes Part 3

This is kind of a next module to this course, that is, the second law of thermodynamics. In this lesson, we'll introduce the second law thermodynamics and need for another law. We'll also introduce heat engines.

Introduction to the Second Law of Thermodynamics

We are going to have a rough look at the basic principles of steam power plant, an example of heat engine. We will also look at thermal efficiency and express it mathematically.

More about heat engines

We'll do a quick revision of what has already been done regarding the 2nd law of thermodynamics. We will  look at the two classical statements of the second law of thermodynamics and it's applications, which are heat pumps and refrigerators.
