The morphological characteristics of the organism are discussed in relation to its cultural conditions, cultural characteristics on blood agar and liquid medium, biochemical reactions and resistance of the organism.

A brief history and the scientists behind the discovery of streptococcus, followed by the classification based on hemolytic properties and lance field groups.

Introduction and Classification of Streptococcus.

The different antigens present in the cell wall are discussed in detail - c antigen, M, T, R proteins and fimbriae or pili.

Antigenic Structure.

Hemolysins, streptokinase, streptodornase, pyrogenic exotoxins, NADase and Hyaluronidase are discussed in detail.

Toxins and Other Virulence Factors

Pathogenicity- suppurative - respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue infections (erysipelas and impetigo), genital infections; non-suppurative infections - acute rheumatic fever, acute glomerulonephritis and Epidemiology are discussed in detail.

Pathogenicity and Epidemiology

Specimen collection, microscopy, culturing, identification- rapid diagnostic test kits and bacitracin sensitivity, serology tests followed by prophylaxis and treatment.
