Overview of the course: Social Institutions

In this lesson, we will answer the following questions-
What is Social Control? How do we define it in terms of Sociology?
What are conflict and functionalist perspectives of Sociology? What do these perspectives say about Social Control? What are the formal and informal Institutions of social control?

2.1 - Society and Social Control

In this lesson, we take up the topic of Family as a Social Institution, and how do functionalist and conflict sociologists view it as a part of the society. Then we will move on the types of families and how each member has a particular role in a Nuclear Family. Then we  discuss the important question "Is it Right to Say that Family is Gendered'?

2.2- Family as a Social Institution

In this lesson, we discuss the types of marriages ranging from monogamy to polygamy to serial monogamy , love marriage, arranged marriage, endogamy and exogamy. Then we discuss the significance of Village exogamy in India and how Vidaai forms a Central focus of folk songs

2.3 - Marriage as an Institution

In this lesson, we first study the sociological definition of work, moving on to how forms of work are different in pre modern and industrially developed societies. Then we will learn what is the purpose of political Institution in a society and how Power, Authority, Sovereignty, and Nationalism are defined in terms of Sociology

2.4 - Work and Politics as Social Institutions

In this lesson, we learn about the general characteristics of religion, the concept of the supernatural, the belief of the sacred.How did Max Weber argue that Religion affects all the aspects of a society. Then we move on to see how education is viewed by conflict and functionalist perspectives.
