This lesson gives you a basic idea about engineering analysis and its different types. It also gives an introduction to Finite element method(FEM) or commonly called as Finite element analysis(FEA). The concept of finite elements is discussed and different types of elements based on the dimensions are also explained here with slight reference to FEM softwares like ANSYS and ABAQUS. This lesson enlightens the viewers with some applications or situations where FEA method can be employed. Various advantages and disadvantages of FEA is also explained in this lesson. Different interpretations of FEM methods is also discussed briefly. The significance of these interpretation and its effect on engineering analysis of physical model is also discussed in this lesson.

Introduction To Finite Element Analysis (in Malayalam)

This lesson gives you a basic idea about the general procedure of finite element analysis. Different types of elements used in finite element analysis are also introduced in this lesson. Phases of finite element method like preprocessing, analysis and postprocessing are discussed here. A brief discription about discretization and its importance in FEM is added in this lesson. A small description about various software packages used in analysis of models is also added in this lesson. Features of these softwares especially the key features of ABAQUS software is also discussed here. Importance of polynomial function as interpolation function is also defined in this lesson. Different types of polynomial functions are also discussed in this lesson.

General procedure in FEA (in Malayalam)

One dimensional problems are problems related to beam or bar element. A general discussion of such a kind of problem is done in this lesson. A general description of stiffness matrix, its properties and the derivation of this very stiffness matrix is done in this lesson. Apart from stiffness matrix a simplified method of derivation for finite element equation is also considered in this lesson. Determining the displacement at any point on a one dimensional element is done easily with the technique defined in this lesson Significance of shape function in deriving the stiffness matrix is defined properly in this lesson. Relation between shape function and derivative of displacement is also discussed in this lesson. This relation finds large application in solving problems when any one of the above is unknown parameter.

Derivation of One Dimensional Bar Element Stiffness Matrix (in Malayalam)

Introduction to trusses with a brief explanation of degrees of freedom in truss element is discussed in this lesson. Truss as an assemblage of bars which are pin-jointed at corners is also defined here. x and y coordinate displacements are also discussed here. Various properties of truss stiffness matrix is discussed in this lesson. The relevance of these properties find wide application in solving or determining stiffness matrix.
