Matter is made up of very small particles.  These particles cannot be seen with our naked eyes. Matter exists in three states - solid,liquid and gaseous states.

Matter and it's Characteristics (in Kannada)

Matter changes from solid state to liquid state and then to gaseous state upon heating. Upon cooling gas becomes a liquid and liquid changes to solid . Some solids directly change to gas without forming a liquid.  This phenomenon is called sublimation.

Elements and compounds are called pure substances while mixtures are called impure substances. 

Elements can again be classified into metals,  non-metals and metalloids.
