Woman’s participation in India’s freedom struggle began as early as in 1817. Bhima Bai Holkar fought bravely against the British colonel Malcolm and defeated him in guerilla warfare. Many women including Rani Channama of Kittur, Rani Begam Hazrat Mahal of Avadh fought against British East India company in the 19th century; 30 years before the “First War of Independence 1857”
The role played by women in the War of Independence (the Great Revolt) of 1857 was creditable and invited the admiration even leaders of the Revolt. Rani of Ramgarh, Rani Jindan Kaur, Rani Tace Bai, Baiza Bai, Chauhan Rani, Tapasvini Maharani daringly led their troops into the battlefield.

Overview of the course

1. That women engaged with Nationalist polities despite constraints of social practices like the purdah system, backwardness and low level of female literacy.
2. That women participated in INM through two parallel processes.
a) The domestication of the public sphere - women participated in the streets without compromising on their domestic values.
b) The politicisation of the domestic sphere - women handled situations in their families when nationalism entered households through the activities of their husbands and sons.
3. That women used the symbolic repertoire of the INM and the political language of Gandhi to facilitate their own participation.

Kamaladevi Chattopdhayay is one of the unsung feminist freedom fighters, art enthusiasts, social activists, actors, youth leaders, and forward-thinkers who transformed our nation's face in all her fields.

SAROJANI NAIDU has famously been been known as the "Cuckoo of India”. 
She was also a distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and one of the great orators of her time. 
Her father Aghoranath Chattopadhyaya was a good scholar of Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Persian and English languages. He was the principal of  The Nizam's College at Hyderabad
Sarojini's mother Varadasundari Devi wrote poetry in Bengali and knew Sanskrit. Sarojini was the eldest among their eight children. 
All the children grew learning and speaking besides Bengali, their mother-tongue, Urdu, Telugu and English. 
One of her brothers Birendranath was a revolutionary and spent his life outside India all the time for fear of getting extradited for sedition and black waters. Other brother Harindranath was a poet, dramatist and actor.

It was founded on May 7, 1917, by women's rights activists such as Annie Besant, Margaret Cousins, Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy, Sister Subbalaskmi and Sarojini Naidu, who referred to themselves as the "daughters of India”
In the early 20th century, WIA battled against the social evils - which ranged from a lack of education of girls, child marriage, and the denial of voting rights. 
The WIA took an active part in the political movements of the time. In 1917, for instance, when Besant was arrested and interned, branches of the WIA took active part in obtaining her release.
