Dr. BR Ambedkar is considered as the father of the Constitution 
and the maker of the Constitution. He was the chairman of the 
drafting committee which drafted the constitution that is why 
he is also called as the chief architect of the constitution.

Polity L 3 - Unique Features of Indian Constitution (in Hindi)

The preamble is a short summary of the constitution 
which brings out its philosophy. 
 Values of Indian democracy can be seen in Preamble of 
the constitution. 
 The Preamble is based on the objective resolution 
moved by Jawaharlal Nehru in the constituent assembly. 
 Preamble is called the soul of constitution because 
whenever there arises any doubt in interpretation of the 
constitution the matter is decided in light of preamble. 
 Preamble describes the nature of Indian state. 
 It gives a clear picture of the type of India which is to be 
constituted that is a sovereign, socialist, secular, 
democratic and Republic polity.

Article 5 to 11 in part II of the Constitution contains 
the provisions related to citizenship. 
 In a modern state peoples are classified as citizens 
and Aliens. 
 Citizens are a class of people who enjoy full Civil

they do not enjoy Civil and political rights. 
 Certain rights which are not available to aliens are 
article 15, 16, 19, 29, 30, right to vote, right to

Part 4 of the Indian Constitution provides for the 
Directive Principles of State Policy. 
 They contain article 36 to 51. 
 Directive Principles of State Policy have been 
taken from Ireland. 
 Directive Principles of State Policy constitute the 
ideas of welfare state through a comprehensive 
program of social and economic order. 
 Directive principles of the state policy ensure 
social and economic democracy.

These are included in Indian Constitution by the 
42nd amendment act 1976 on the basis of Swaran 
Singh Committee report. 
 It is based on former USSR model. 
 10 duties of citizens towards the state have been 
enumerated by inserting article 51 A in part 4A of 
Indian Constitution. 
 11th fundamental duty has been added by 86th 
Constitutional Amendment Act 2002.

Article 52 says that “there shall be a President 
of India”. 
 According to Article 53 the executive powers of 
the union shall be vested in the president. 
 The president is the head of the Indian state. 
 He is the nominal Executive head.
 The provisions dealing with the elections of the 
President are mentioned under article 54 and 55.
 The President of India is elected through and 
electoral college provided under article 54.

 Appoints the Prime minister and other 
ministers on the advice of the Prime minister. 
 He appoints the Attorney General of India and 
determines his remuneration who works under the

The constitution provides for an office of 
Governor in this state under article 153. 
 The executive power of the state shall be 
vested in the Governor and shall be exercised by 
him either directly or indirectly through the officer

the President by warrant under his hand and 
seal.
