Genetic inheritance. Genetic inheritance is a basic principle of genetics and explains how characteristics are passed from one generation to the next. Genetic inheritance occurs due to genetic material in the form of DNA being passed from parents to their offspring.

Mendel's Law of Segregation states individuals possess two alleles and a parent passes only one allele to his/her offspring. Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment states theinheritance of one pair of factors ( genes ) is independent of the inheritance of the other pair.

The mutation analysis is a further aspect of the process that we have called genetic dissection of living systems. As we have seen, the first stage of any mutational dissection is the mutant hunt. The effectiveness of the hunt can be improved dramatically by using mutagens.

Gene dissection

In genetics, complementation occurs when two strains of an organism with different homozygous recessive mutations that produce the same mutant phenotype produce offspring with the wild-type phenotype when mated or crossed. Complementation will occur only if the mutations are in different genes.

Sex determination and Pedigree Analysis

Genetic linkage is the tendency of DNA sequences that are close together on a chromosome to be inherited together during the meiosis phase of sexual reproduction. Two genetic markers that are physically near to each other are unlikely to be separated onto different chromatids during chromosomal crossover, and are therefore said to be more linked than markers that are far apart. In other words, the nearer two genesare on a chromosome, the lower the chance of recombination between them, and the more likely they are to be inherited together. Markers on different chromosomes are perfectly unlinked..

Linkage and Mapping

In some organisms, tetrad formation is followed by a post-meiotic mitosis within the ascus, resulting in spore octads. If the four spores are situated in the same linear order as produced by the two divisions of meiosis it is an ordered tetrad.

A "polygene” or "multiple gene inheritance" is a member of a group of non-epistatic genes that interact additively to influence a phenotypic trait.

Polygenic Inheritance

Extranuclear inheritance or cytoplasmic inheritance is the transmission of genes that occur outside the nucleus. It is found in most eukaryotes and is commonly known to occur in cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts or from cellular parasites like viruses or bacteria.

Population genetics is a subfield of genetics that deals with genetic differences within and between populations, and is a part of evolutionary biology. Studies in this branch of biology examine such phenomena as adaptation, speciation, and population structure.
