In this lesson we shall discuss about the various categories of 'Protected Areas' as declared by government and IUCN separately.

Lesson- 3.1 Protected Areas (in Hindi)

The lesson contains list of National Parks of India explained through maps and state wise in tabular format.

Students are advised to pause the slides for a while to see the location of NPs properly.

There is one small correction. Kangchendzonga (Kanchenjunga), the only NP of Sikkim, has remained unnumbered erroneously. It should have been numbered 55. So please remember that.

Lesson- 3.2 National Parks of India (in Hindi)

This lesson contains the exhaustive list of the wildlife sanctuaries in India. It was not practically possible to name each and every sanctuary individually in a limited 15 minute lecture.

So students are advised to pause the slides and read the names of the sanctuaries along with the states.

The list has been made for easy memorization of the names along with the number of sanctuaries in each state.

Lesson- 3.3 Wildlife Sanctuaries in India (in Hindi)

Why tiger is so important ? Nowadays it's quite  common to read about tigers in newspapers and magazines/periodicals. But the question is, why tiger is so important ?


Tiger is an umbrella species and its protection ensures survival of many other species inadvertently.

Apart from this, the various subspecies of tiger, according to both new and old systems, have been described with maps.

Also, the nine initial Tiger Reserves have been mentioned and few important facts about tiger, including white tiger.

Lesson- 3.4 Why Tiger ? (in Hindi)

Initially 9 Tiger Reserves were declared. All other subsequent tiger reserves have been shown through maps, region wise.

Tiger counting methods have also been explained.

Tiger population in tabular format has been presented - 2006, 2010 and 2014 censuses.

Lesson 3.5 Project Tiger (in Hindi)

Elephants require large habitats as well as huge corridors. That is why elephant and its conservation is quite important.

The lesson covers the basic description of Asian elephant, Indian elephant, its ranges, etc.

The elephant reserves are shown through maps, region wise.

Finally elephant population in 2007 and 2017 are presented in tabular format to enable students compare the population statistics.

Lesson 3.6 Project Elephant (in Hindi)

Biosphere reserve is a comparatively modern concept of conservation aimed at balancing the human activities and nature in ecologically sensitive areas.

Although, GoI has declared 18 biosphere reserves, IUCN recognizes only 10. All the biosphere reserves are depicted using maps for easier reference.

Also, the BRs are presented in tabular format in the order of year of creation.

There is a small correction. Sheshachalam Hills BR is in Andhra Pradesh, and not in Karnataka, as mentioned erroneously. However it has been correctly plotted on the map. So please take care of this fact.

Lesson-3.7 Biosphere Reserves (in Hindi)

Community conservation has emerged as the most dynamic, participatory, practicable and sustainable method of conservation.

The community as a whole, or a substantial part of it, is involved in active conservation according to their customary laws and government laws.

Apart from the IUCN's concept of ICCA, few examples of community conservation have been mentioned.

Also, an exhaustive list of conservation reserves and community reserves is presented in a tabular form for easy understanding and memorizing.
