This lesson gives you a basic idea about engineering analysis and its different types. It also gives an introduction to Finite element method(FEM) or commonly called as Finite element analysis(FEA). The concept of finite elements is discussed and different types of elements based on the dimensions are also explained here with slight reference to FEM softwares like ANSYS and ABAQUS. This lesson enlightens the viewers with some applications or situations where FEA method can be employed. Various advantages and disadvantages of FEA is also explained in this lesson. Different interpretations of FEM methods is also discussed briefly. The significance of these interpretation and its effect on engineering analysis of physical model is also discussed in this lesson.

Overview of Engineering Analysis and Introduction to Finite Element Method

This lesson gives you a basic idea about the general procedure of finite element analysis. Different types of elements used in finite element analysis are also introduced in this lesson. Phases of finite element method like preprocessing, analysis and postprocessing are discussed here. A brief discription about discretization and its importance in FEM is added in this lesson. A small description about various software packages used in analysis of models is also added in this lesson. Features of these softwares especially the key features of ABAQUS software is also discussed here. Importance of polynomial function as interpolation function is also defined in this lesson. Different types of polynomial functions are also discussed in this lesson.

General Procedure in finite Element Method

Basics of finite element method is discussed in this lesson. Some of the important terms in FEM is discussed here. These terms will be important and should be known prior to using finite element analysis softwares. Introduction to some of the terms used in finite element analysis is being discussed. Different stages of finite element method like preprocessing, analysis and postprocessing stages are discussed deeply through this lesson. This lesson will be a paving stone to analysis software basics. These basics will help you understand the details of analysis softwares easily. Various analysis softwares available in market are ANSYS, ABAQUS etc. These softwares helps the user solve analysis and interpret the result graphically. Mostly stress and strain, deformation plots are obtained as results from these softwares.

Terms used in finite Element Method

This lesson gives an introduction to ABAQUS software and the importance of preprocessing stage is defined briefly in this lesson. Other stages of finite element method like analysis and post processing are also discussed in this course. This lesson will be helpful in explaining the different modules in preprocessing stage like part, property, assembly modules. Different tools used in modelling the geometry are also explained in this lesson. The relevance of different material properties and their applications are also defined in detail through this lesson. A slight insight to the history of ABAQUS software is also done in this lesson. The importance of assembly module and different linear and circular patterns are also discussed in this lesson.

Introduction to finite Element Analysis Software - ABAQUS: Part 1

If the previous lesson was about the significance of preprocessing stage then this lesson provides the relevance of analysis and post processing stages . This lesson teaches different modules like mesh, load, interaction, visualisation and job modules . The usage of interaction module in the case of non structural problem is also defined in this lesson. Non structural problems are those in which we will be getting temperature and pressure at nodes which are then used to define controlling equations. But in the case of structural problems we had displacements at nodes. Methods of obtaining stress-strain graphs and plots is defined in this lesson. Visualization process for unformed and deformed structures are well explained with proper screenshot explanation. Proper explanation of obtaining the notepad results for every element in the structure is done in this lesson.

Introduction to Finite Element Software: Part 2

This video gives an introduction to 1dimensional problems. A slight reference to 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional elements and their application is also discussed in this lesson. Different types of forces like body force, traction force and point load are discussed briefly in this lesson. A brief introduction about global co-ordinates, local coordinates and natural coordinates is being explained in this lesson. Properties of stiffness matrix and introduction to shape function are some of the other important topics discussed in this lesson. Characteristics of shape function and its relevance at non nodal points are also described in this lesson. Significance of shape function with a proper example of three noded triangular element is described in this lesson. Introduction and utilization of field variable function and its dependency on shape function is described in this lesson.

Introduction to 1 Dimensional Problems

One dimensional problems are problems related to beam or bar element. A general discussion of such a kind of problem is done in this lesson. A general description of stiffness matrix, its properties and the derivation of this very stiffness matrix is done in this lesson. Apart from stiffness matrix a simplified method of derivation for finite element equation is also considered in this lesson. Determining the displacement at any point on a one dimensional element is done easily with the technique defined in this lesson Significance of shape function in deriving the stiffness matrix is defined properly in this lesson. Relation between shape function and derivative of displacement is also discussed in this lesson. This relation finds large application in solving problems when any one of the above is unknown parameter.

Derivation of Stiffness Matrix and finite Element Equation for One Dimensional Linear bar Element

Introduction to trusses with a brief explanation of degrees of freedom in truss element is discussed in this lesson. Truss as an assemblage of bars which are pin-jointed at corners is also defined here. x and y coordinate displacements are also discussed here. Various properties of truss stiffness matrix is discussed in this lesson. The relevance of these properties find wide application in solving or determining stiffness matrix. Definition for total and minimum potential energy is being discussed here in this video. Some of the properties of total potential energy(T.P.E) are also discussed here. Relation of equilibrium state and second order partial derivative of  T.P.E is defined in this lesson. Importance and significance of square and curly bracket is also defined in this lesson. This lesson also gives a simplified derivation for trusses(3 bar).

Introduction to Trusses

This lesson gives a brief outline of how we can solve a 3bar truss problem. Considerations that should be made while solving the same are also discussed. Importance of drawing displacement diagram at nodes is very helpful in understanding the displacements. Tricks for remembering 4x4 stiffness matrix is provided in this lesson. Applying boundary conditions and reducing the finite element equation is importantly defined here. Significance of numbering each row and column of local stiffness matrix before assembling them to form global stiffness matrix is defined elaborately in this lesson. Stress determination at nodal points is also described along with the help of proper finite element equations. Assuming the outer coefficient of stiffness matrix nearly equal for different local stiffness matrix and the relevance of doing so is discussed along in this lesson.

Mathematical Problem solving for 3 bar Truss Element

Basic definition of beam as a structural element is discussed here in this lesson. Beams and its different types depending upon the supporting nature are discussed. Various types like cantilever, simply supported and overhanging beams are explained with proper examples. Definition for transverse loading and the relevance of this type of loading in beams are discussed here. Effect of transverse loading on various elements with suitable examples is also discussed in this lesson. Types of loading like uniformly distributed loading and uniformly varying loading are explained in this lesson. Different terminologies related to beam element are discussed. The sign conventions for rotation at nodes, displacement and moment of inertia at nodes and nodal and their significance while solving a beam problem mathematically is broadly elaborated in this lesson.
