The ancient Indians were the earliest issuers of coins in the world, along with Chinese and Lydians. This lesson gives you an overview of the history of Indian currency which not only spans over centuries but also has quite a fascinating past.

The first Indian coins were punch marked by the Mahajanapadas in 6th century BC and this marked the starting of the fascinating journey of the Indian currency.

The coins of the Gupta Empire were regarded as the most beautiful coins of ancient India. A key feature of coins during the reign of The Turkish Sultans of Delhi was Islamic calligraphy. An attempt to standardize the monetary system was also made during their time.

Coinage during the Gupta Empire, Slave Dynasty and Vijayanagara Empire

Sher-Shah Suri, after defeating Humayun introduced a silver coin which was named 'rupiya'. This remained in circulation throughout the Mughal period.

After the death of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire weakened and Britishers seized this opportunity to obtain rights of minting Mughal money.

Birth of 'Rupiya', Coinage during Mughal Empire and colonial rule

The Government of India took over the issue of banknotes in 1861 from private banks and started issuing uniface notes. 
Finally in 1935, The Reserve Bank Of India was formally set up and was empowered to issue notes in India.
