Every cell division takes place in two stages namely karyokinesis and cytokinesis.
Karyokinesis is division of the nucleus and cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm.

Cell Division

Karyokinesis takes place in four  stages or phases namely prophase,  metaphase, anaphase and telophase. 

After the nucleus has divided,  cytoplasm divides and this is called cytokinesis.

Mitosis or the Equational Cell Division

Meiosis is a type of cell division which takes place only in sexually reproducing organisms. 

It takes place in the reproductive cells during gamete formation.

Meiosis or the Reduction Cell Division

Meiosis-l results in the formation of two daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes. 
 
A second division is required to separate the chromatids. 

This is Meiosis-ll.

Meiosis-ll results in the formation of four daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes. 
For this reason meiosis is called a reduction division. 
Meiosis helps in maintaining the number of chromosomes in every generation.  
It also helps in bringing variations through crossing over of chromosomes.
