Overview

Before discussing about the imperial Guptas, it will be very useful to understand the conditions of the sub-continent before their rise, particularly the political scenario. This lesson will provide you the insight about the origin of the imperial Guptas. This is a seldom discussed topic, which is being presented to you. So it will be more helpful if you use a blank map to locate the various divisions and places, apart from preparing the notes.

The Political Conditions before the Guptas

The Gupta Era as well as the imperial Gupta period begins from 320 AD with the accession of Chandragupta I to the throne of Magadh. The lesson will cover the important highlights of his reign and those of his son, Samudragupta's almost half-century long regime full of extensive conquests and various other achievements. Again it is advised to use blank maps, along with your notes, to mark the places on it.

Chandragupta I and Samudragupta

While Samudragupta extended the empire over the eastern half of the sub-continent, it was during the reign of his son, Chandragupta II Vikramaditya, that it attained the glory coveted by every great empire. His son Kumaragupta maintained it while his grandson Skandagupta saved the empire from the perilous nomadic invasions of Hunas from the central Asia. So the lesson will cover a period of more than eight decades of Gupta glory, between 380 and 467 AD.

Chandragupta II, Kumaragupta, Skandgupta

The Huna invasion after Skandagupta in 480s, gave a death blow to the Gupta Empire. To make matters worse, the weak and incompetent successors of Skandagupta did virtually nothing to restore the glory and pride of their ancestors. The crumbling empire decomposed into miscellaneous small kingdoms, which we should take into account before discussing about the achievements and developments during the Gupta period. It is advised to watch it very carefully before moving further to Harsha and Medieval India.

Hunas and Later Guptas

The Gupta period is best remembered for two reasons : 1. The development in the field of religion 2. The development of science, art and culture. This lesson will deal with the society, the lifestyle of the people and the religious development at that time. What we call 'Hinduism' today, took its shape during this period only. Many details are present in the slides but could not be highlighted due to the limitation of time. So the students are advised to study the details in the individual slides very carefully.

Religion, Society and Lifestyle - Gupta Period

The other major achievement of the Gupta period was the all round development in perhaps every erstwhile existing discipline. The peace and political stability, coupled by the patronage from the mighty emperors enabled the artists, poets and writers, mathematicians and scientists and philosophers to do their best in order to earn the era an epithet of 'The Golden Age of India.'This lesson too will require your special attention, particularly the military section, which is detailed in the slides but could not be highlighted adequately.

Art and Culture - Gupta Period

The peace and political stability always has one more advantage in addition to those discussed in the previous two lessons, and that is 'economic prosperity'. So in this lesson, we are going to study about the various features of the Gupta Economy, viz. the segments, systems, foreign trade, etc. You can very well compare the then existing processes and institutions with the ones in vogue today. It is a very important section and feature of the Gupta period, so please watch the details very carefully.

The Gupta polity is quite cumbersome to study, surmise and summarize. It covers so many details that it became inevitable to split the whole into two inter-related parts : 1. The first one will deal with the institutions and structure of the system 2. The second one will also cover the various notions and policies. In this particular lesson, an overview of the administrative structure is explained.

Gupta Period's Polity - 1

The Gupta polity is quite cumbersome to study, surmise and summarize. It covers so many details that it became inevitable to split the whole into two inter-related parts : 1. The first one will deal with the institutions and structure of the system 2. The second one will also cover the various notions and policies. In this particular lesson, an overview of the administrative structure is explained. So this lesson will cover the policies adopted by Gupta emperors towards their own domain and the foreigners.
