Chemotherapeutic agents, then, are chemicals intended to be toxic to the pathogenic organism but innocuous to the host. The term chemotherapy was originally used to describe the use of drugs that were ‘selectively toxic’ to pathogens (including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi and helminths) while having minimal effects on the host.
