UPSC Civil Services Mains 2013 General Studies Paper 1 (GS1) was a real surprise for all candidates. It had, for the first time, 25 compulsory essay questions to be written within 3 hours. The total word limit mentioned was as ‘not more than 5000 words’. This was a change from the previous 3000-3600 word papers, and hence required writing at great speed to finish.
