Introduction

Liberty is perhaps the most evocative and desired political ideal. Freedom has mobilised millions across the centuries, and will no doubt mobilise more in the centuries to come. We discuss what liberty means, its relationship with State authority, the different dimensions of liberty and end with a discussion of liberty in the Indian constitution.

What is Liberty?

Liberty is a universal value, but there are various ways in which philosophers have understood liberty and the means to achieve it. We discuss the ideas of prominent political philosophies on this subject, and finally look at freedom as emancipation and freedom as development.

Conceptions of Liberty

Equality is a very important political ideal, almost as hallowed as liberty. We discuss the relationship between equality and liberty, the history of equality, the question of whether equality is unnatural, and what are rational grounds for discrimination in an equal society. We end with a discussion of equality in the Indian Constitution.

What is Equality?

We discuss the distinction between natural and conventional inequalities, formal and substantive equality, and simple and complex equality. We further discuss the legal, political and socio-economic dimensions of equality.

Dimensions of Equality

Justice is the ultimate political ideal, the goal that all ideals strive towards. We discuss the definition of justice, the distinction between rightness and goodness, the scope and dynamic nature of justice. We also discuss its relationship with other ideals. We then talk about the classical and modern conceptions of justice, and end with a discussion on justice in the context of the Indian Constitution.

What is Justice?

We discuss the various dimensions of justice - legal, political and socio-economic. We further discuss the distinctions between procedural and substantive justice, and retributive and distributive justice.

Dimensions of Justice

We discuss the theories of John Rawls and Robert Nozick and how they differ. We outline their principles of just distribution. We end with Amartya Sen's concept of Nyaya as opposed to Niti. We also discuss criticisms of the three philosophers.

Perspectives on Justice (Rawls, Nozick & Sen)

We discuss the different interpretations of justice in Marxism, the idea of gender justice in feminism and the communitarian critique of individualism and their idea of community-specific justice.
