Photosynthesis literally means synthesis with the help of light.It is a physico_chemical process.Photosynthesis the primary source of food.It release oxygen into the atmosphere.Different experiments to prove the conditions necessary for photosynthesis.They are variegated leaf experiment ,half leaf experiment,bell jar experiments.Aquatic plants also release o2.First visible product is starch.Action spectrum hypothesis that blue& red regions of visible spectrum release o2.

Cornelius van Noel demonstrated that photosynthesis is essentially a light dependent reaction.Photosynthesiss  takes place in green l and green parts.Cells of the green leaves contain chloroplast.Chlorophyll molecules lie inside the grama. The gramam is the site of light reaction.Stroma is the site of dark reaction.ATP&NADPH are the products of light reaction.Dark reaction results in the formation of sugar.Sugar is converted to starch.

Pigments are the substance that have an ability to absorb light at specific wave lengths.Leaf  pigments of green plants can be separated through paper chromatography.The pigments in plants are divided into two groups.They are chlorophyll and carotenoid.A curve obtained by plotting the amount of absorption of different wavelengths of light by a particular pigment is called absorption spectrum.The graphical representation showing rate of photosynthesis at different wavelengths of light is called action spectrum.

Light reaction include light absorption,water splitting,oxygen release,formation of ATP&NADPH. The pigments are organized into two discrete photochemical light harvesting complex es within the photodystem1 and photosystem2.The LHC are made up of hundreds of pigments bound to proteins.A photosynthetic unit consists of reaction centre&ligt harvesting pigments molecules.

Light Reaction (in Malayalam)

Pigments Systems _A group of pigment molecules which absorb light energy is called a pigment system.Each pigment system has a reaction centre and several hundreds of accessory pigments.Photosystem1 has more chlorophyll _a molecules and small number of chlorophyll _b molecules.The reaction centre is P700.Photosystem2 has more chlorophyll _b and small number of chlorophyll _a molecules.The reaction centre is P680.

Pigments Systems(photosystems).

Photophosphorylation is the synthesis of ATP in the presence of light.It is two types,1.Noncyclic photophosphorylation and 2.Cyclic photophosphorylation.The Z_scheme is formed when all the carries are placed in a sequence on a redox potential scale as follows.1.uphill transfer of electrons from ps2 to the electron acceptor.2. Downhill movement from electron acceptor to ps2 through cytochrome.3. Uphill transfer of electron s from PS1 to the electron acceptor.4. Downhill to NADP+ to form NADP+H+.

Photophosphorylation - Non cyclic (in Malayalam)

Cyclic Photophosphorylation.It occurs in stroma lamellae.Stroma lamellae contains PS1 only.It lacksPS2 and NADP reductase enzyme.It occurs when only light of wavelength beyond680nm are available for excitation.The excited electrons does not pass on to NADP but are cycled back to PS1 through the electron transport chain.Phosphorylation occurs due to the cyclic flow of electrons.OnlyATP is synthesised.
