Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants

Flower is the sexual reproductive unit in the angiosperms.A flower is a modified shoot.The stalk of the flower is called pedicel. The upper part of the pedicel is swollen and is known as thalamus or receptacle.The thalamus bears four floral whorls. They are calyx,corolla,androecium,gynoecium.Calyx and corolla are known as accessory organs,androecium and gynoecium is known as reproductive parts.

The Flower (in Malayalam)

Bisexual_A flower with both androecium and gynoecium.Unisexual_A flower with either androecium  or gynoecium. Actinomorphic_A flower that can be divided into two equal halves in any radial plane passing the centre.eg.mustard .Zygomorphic_A flower that can be divided into two equal halves only in one vertical plan.eg.pea ,bean.Asymmetric_A flower  can't be divided into two similar halves by any vertical plane passing through the centre,eg.canna.Trimerous_A flower in which number of parts in each whorl is 3 or multiples of 3.eg.monocots.Tetramerous_A flower in which number of parts in each whorl is 4or multiples of 4. Pentamerous_A flowe in which number of parts a  in each whorl is 5 or its multiple.eg most dicots . Bracteate_A flower with a bract.Ebracteate_A flower with out bract.

Terminology for describing a Flower (in Malayalam)

Based on the position of thalamus flowers may be of three types.Hypogynous flower _The thalamus is flat,convex,conical.Gynoecium occupies the high est position.The ovary is superior.If the gynoecium is situated at centre,the other parts on the rim of thalamus,the ovary is half inferior.In epiyunous flower the over is inferior,the other parts above the ovary.Calyx,corolla,androecium,gynoecium are the parts of a flower.Calyx may be polyseplous or gamoseplous. Corolla also be polypetalous or gamoseplous.

Aestivation__The mode of arrangement of sepal or petal in a flower bud is called aestivation.Valvate,twisted,imbricate,vexillary are the different types of aestivation.Valvate_When the edges of sepal or petals just meet one another without overlapping.eg.calotrophis.Twisted_ one margin of an appendage overlaps that of the next and so on.eg.china rose.Imbricate_Sepal and petal overlaps one another but not in particular direction.one appendage completely inside,one completely outside,others regularly overlaps.eg.cassia.Vexillary _Five petals are here.;the largest (standard) overlaps the two lateral petals(wing)which over lap the two smallest anterior petal(keel).eg.pea.   Androecium is the third whorl.It is composed of stamens.Filament and anther are the parts of stamen.

Aestivation (in Malayalam)

Androecium _lt is the third whorl composed of stamens.Male reproductive part is the stamen.Stamens may be united with other members or themselves.Epipetalous_attached to petals,eg.brinjal.Epiphyllous_attached to perianth,eg.lily.The stamens may be united into one bundle(monoadelphous) eg.china rose,two bundle s(diadelphous),eg.pea,more than two(polyseplous).Gynoecium_Female reproductive part.It is composed of carpels.Ovary is the enlarged basal part.the elongated tube is style,.The stigma the top is the receptive surface of pollen .When the carpels are free it is termed apocarpous.They are termed synchronous when carpels are fused .eg.tomato

Reproductive Parts in a Flower (in Malayalam)

Placentation is the mode of arrangement of ovules on the placenta within the ovary.The different types of placentation are marginal,axile,parietal,free-central and basal placentation.ln marginal placentation the ovary is one chambered and the placenta forms a ridge  along the ventral suture of the ovary.eg pea.In axile placentation ovary is multi carpellary syncarpous,and multilocular.eg.china rose.Parietal placentation is seen in multi carpellary and syncarpous postil. The ovary is unilocular.eg.mustard.Free central_ovary is unilocular and placenta arises from the base of the ovary.eg.dianthus.Basal placentation-ovary is unilocular.The placenta develops at the base of ovary and bears a single ovules.eg.sunflower.  Fruit is the ripened ovary developed after fertilization. A Fruit formed with out fertilization is called parthenocarpic fruit.Fruit consists of outer pericarp  and inner seed. The pericarp is divided into outer pericarp,middle mesocarp,inner endoc.arp

Placentation and Fruit

Seed is a mature ovule containing embryo.Embryo consists of radicle,an embryonal axis and one or two cotyledons.Seeds are of two types,endospermous and nonendospermous.S t. of dicots seed_Outermost covering is the seed coat.Testa and temen are the layers in seed coat.Hilum is the scar.Micropyle is the small pore.Embryonal axis and cotyledons are present.Plumule and radicle are the ends of embryonal axis.seed with endosperm is endosperm ous and seed with out endosperm is non endospermous.St. of monocot seed-Aleurone layer is the layer which separating embryo and endosperm.Embryo is small , consists of one large shield shaped cotyledon called scutellum.Plumule and radicle are enclosed in sheaths called coleoptile and coleorhiza.

Fabaceae_It is distributed all over the world.Trees, shrubs and herbs.Root nodules present. Stem  is erect or climber. Leave s are alternate,pinnately compound,pulvinate,stipulate,reticulate venation. Race mode inflorescence. Flower bisexual,zygomorphic. Calyx gamoseplous,corolla polypetalous. Androecium diadelphous,gynoecium superior, monocarprllary. Fruit legume.

Fabaceae

Solanaceae is a large family,known as potato family. It is world widely distributed. Plats are mostly herbs,shrubs and small trees. Stem is herbaceous rarely woody., Underground stem in potato. Leaves are alternate,simple,rarely pinnaale compound,exstipulate,reticulate venation
. Flower is solitary,bisexual,actinomorphic,cymose in solanum.calyx and corolla consists of 5 sepals and 5 petals. In androecium 5 stamens are present. Gynoecium consists of two carpels. Fruits are  berry or capsule. Many seeds are present,endospermous.

Solanaceae.

Liliaceae is a characteristic representative of monocot s. It is perennial herbs with underground bulbs. Leaves are basal,alternate linear,exstipulate,parallel venation. Flowers are solitary,cymose. Perianth present. Androecium consists of six stamens . Gynoecium consists of three carpels,syncarpous,superior ovary. Fruits are capsule,rarely berry. Seed endospermous.
