This course by Vaibhav Jindal, who has cracked SSC CGL twice (2014, 2015), explains Reported Speech in detail through seven different lessons. Delving into its different nuances in each lesson, he would cover basic rules of reported speech, change in pronoun, change in tenses in reported speech, changes in models, time and place terms, and specific rules for different kinds of sentences. To help you gain a practical understanding of the topics, the final lesson would include mixed exercises.

Overview- Learning the concept of Reported Speech for SSC CGL examination

At the beginning of the lesson, Vaibhav lists out the importance of learning reported speech as it constitutes 10% of Tier 2 examination (worth 20 marks) and can be cracked easily. Moving ahead, the lesson explains, in a nutshell, what is speech, different kinds of speech, general rules that apply to them, and the change in pronoun that should be made while changing from direct to indirect speech.

Introduction

Change in tenses when you change direct speech into indirect speech is crucial for understanding reported speech. This lesson by Vaibhav explains how simple present tense changes to simple past, simple past tense to past perfect, present continuous tense to past continuous, and past continuous tense to past perfect tense. The exception to these rules only apply to past perfect, past perfect continuous, and universal truth as in their cases, only the pronoun changes.

Changes in Tenses

In this lesson, Vaibhav covers the important topics - definition of models, change in models, time, place (while converting direct to indirect speech), and rules to consider for assertive sentences. In addition to this, he also lists out a few more rules including those related to puncutation which you need to keep in mind while attempting the questions.

Building on the previous lessons, Vaibhav begins with listing out the definition of interrogative sentences and easier ways to identify them. Having done that, he takes you through all the important rules you need to keep in mind while changing direct interrogative sentences to indirect.

Having outlined the definition of imperative sentences, Vaibhav explains the rules to be remembered while changing direct imperative sentences to indirect speech. He also covers how to identify and solve questions related to negative imperative sentences. He ends the lesson by explaning special usages of words - forbade, prohibit, and let.

In the penultimate lesson of the course, Vaibhav introduces you to optative and exclamatory sentences and the key rules you should memorise and apply while changing them from direct to indirect speech.
