In special theory of relativity Galilean transformation doesn't work . But Lorentz transformation is a basic and important concept without which special relativity is nothing... And the concept of LT came from Galilean transformation . LT is correction in GT and to understand LT and study Special relativity it is necessary to study Galiean transformation which is comon sense relation for transformation of particle which we in our every day life experience s.

As we study Newton's law of motion under classical mechanics . Which gives us three Newton's kinematical equation which are invarient under Galilean transformation .

Michelson Morley came forward to prove there exist a luminiferous ether in which light travel but while performing experiment they found that there doesn't exist such type of ether and as a result of the experiment they found that light moves with constant speed with respect to any medium or reference frame. This experiment open new stream in physics i.e Special theory of relativity .

Maxwell's electromagnetic equations are not remain invarient under Galilean transformation. Which means that GT is not sufficient to show all equation and thats why there is need of Lorentz transformation.
