There are millions of living organisms on this earth. It's not possible to study each and every organism. Classification helps us to study these organisms and also to interrelate these organisms.

Need for Classification

Hierarchy refers to classifying the living organisms based on similarities and differences. The highest level is kingdom and the lowest level is species. These levels are also called taxa and hence the name taxonomy.

Giving a scientific name to every living organism is called binomial nomenclature.
Every scientific name has two components - name of the genus and name of the species to which it belongs.
Ex: Homo sapiens.

Some organisms operate at cellular level. Different cells perform various functions like protection,absorption of food etc. Cells combine to form tissues,tissues form organs,organs come together to form organ-systems and a higher organisms has different organ systems. Example- we have respiratory system,nervous system, transport system and so on.

Organisms can also be classified on the basis of coelom or bodycavity,circulatory system and symmetry also.

Kingdom Monera consists of prokaryotic organisms. All bacteria belong to this kingdom.
Some bacteria are autotrophic while some are heterotrophic.

Kingdom Protista includes unicellular, eukaryotic organisms.
Unicellular algae and protozoa belong to this kingdom. 
Some are aututrophic while some are hetertrophic in nature.

Kingdom Mycota or Fungi. 
It includes eukaryotic, herotrophic fungi.
They can be unicellular or multicellular.
Some are useful like yeast and some are harmful like ringworm.

Kingdom Plantae consists of two types of plants- non vascular plants and vascular plants. Non vascular plants are thallophytes and bryophytes. 
This lesson is about non vascular plants.

Kingdom Plantae or Metaphyta

Vascular plants have the conducting tissues- Xylem and Phloem.
Xylem is a water conducting tissue while phloem is a food conducting tissue. 
There are three groups of vascular plants- pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Animals are mainly classified into nonchordates and chordates. They can also be called invertebrates and vertebrates.
 There are  eight phyla of invertebrates and five classes of vertebrates.
This lesson describes two phyla of invertebrates- sponges and concentrates.

Animal Kingdom or Metazoa.

This lesson includes three phyla of invertebrates- flatworms, roundworms and segmented worms.

This lesson includes Arthropods,Molluscs and three Echinoderms.
Arthropods are the largest phylum of invertebrates, Molluscs are the second largest phylum of invertebrates.

Chordates are classified into protochordates and vertebrates. 
Vertebrates are again classified into Pisces,  amphibians,  reptiles, aves and mammals.

Chordates or Vertebrates.

This lesson includes reptiles, birds and mammals.
Reptiles are cold blooded while birds and mammals are warm blooded.

General science includes physics,chemistry and biology.
