Electrochemistry: Study of production of electricity from energy released during spontaneous chemical reaction and use of electrical energy 

Electrochemical cells:

1. Daniel cell

Cell converts the chemical energy liberated during the redox reaction 

Zn+ Cu2+ -------> Zn2+ + Cu

Its electrode potential equals to 1.1 v

2, Galvonic cells

A galvonic cells is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy of spontaneous redox reaction into electrical energy 

Half reduction occurs on oxidation and reduction cells it's called half cells


Standard hydrogen electrode

The standard hydrogen electrode consists of platinum electrode coated with platinum black.  The electrode is dipped in an acid solution and pure hydrogen gas is bubbled.  The concentration of both the reduced and oxidised forms of hydrogen

In an electrolytic cells external source of voltage is used to bring about a chemical reaction

Exp: simplest cell consist of two copper strips dipping in aqueous solution of CusO4

Quantitative aspect of electrolysis 

Faraday laws of electrolysis 

1 st law: The amount of chemical reaction which occurs at any electrode during electrolysis by a current propotional to the quantity of electricity 

2 nd law: The amount of different substance liberated by the same quantity of electricity passing through the electrolytic solution are propotional to their chemical equivalent weights

Primary batteries  and secondary batteries

Primary batteries 

Not Reusable,  Rechargeable,  and reaction occurs in one reaction 
Eg: Dry cell
Components - Zinc container act as anode and the cathode is carbon rod surrounded by powdered Mno2 and carbon.  The space between the electrodes is filled by moist paste of NH4cl and Zncl2

Cell potential - 1.5 v 

Another example 

Mercury cell

Components - zinc - Mercury amalgam as anode and a paste of Hgo and carbon as the cathode 

Cell potential - 1.35 v
