Cell is the basic structural as well as the functional unit of life in living organisms. There are two types of cell based on evolutionary features and organelles found- Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells are features of Kingdom Monera - Eubacteria, while the Eukaryotic cells are features of humans, plants, animals fungi and protozoans.

Cells are the structural and functional unit of every living organism. This lesson includes the cell theory, the scientists responsible for the discoveries associated with cell and some facts about the cell organelles.

Prokaryotic Cell Structure

Ribosomes were discovered by George Palade. Also referred to as "An organelle within an organelle". This is so because they are not only found in cytoplasm but 70s types are found in mitochondria and chloroplasts as well. They help in synthesis of proteins. They may be free or attached. 70s type are found in prokaryotes while 80s types are a feature of eukaryotes.

Ribosomes

Cell wall is the delimiting layer in plant cells and is freely permeable. It is a rigid, non living layer generally made up of cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin. It provides shape and rigidity to plant cells. There are four different types of cell junctions:
         - tight junctions
         - Gap junctions
         - Desmosomes
         - Hemidesmosomes
  Plasmodesmata are examples of gap junctions.

Cell Wall and Cell Junctions

Nucleus- The brain of a cell, bears the genetic material, nucleolus and nucleoplasm. Nuclear envelope separates the nucleoplasm from cytoplasm. Chromosomes are distinctly visible in an actively dividing cell while chromatin fibres can be observed in an interphasic nucleus. Depending on the position of centromere, the chromosomes can be viewed in different shapes in a dividing cell:
-Metacentric chromosome- V shaped.
-Submetacentric chromosome- L shaped.
-Acrocentric chromosome- J shaped. 
-Telocentric chromosome- I shaped.

Nucleus

The endomembrane system is a system comprising of all those membranous cell organelles which are well coordinated to each other with respect to function and include endoplasmic reticulum, golgi bodies, lysosomes and vacuoles. Mitochondria, plastids and peroxisomes do not coordinate with the functions of these organelles, hence are not a part of endomembrane system.

The Endomembrane System

Mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own single circular DNA, few RNA molecules, 70s ribosomes and the components required for protein synthesis- all that is crucial for binary fission. Hence, these two double membrane bound organelles are called as self replicating organelles. They do not form a part of endomembrane system. Janus green stains mitochondria.

Peroxisomes are small spherical organelles also denoted as microbodies. They contain oxidase that promote oxidation of lipids especially beta oxidation of fatty acids forming acetyl CoA and Hydrogen peroxide. Catalases liberate oxygen from hydrogen peroxide reducing oxidative stress.

Cell membrane is the delimiting boundary in animals while covered by cell wall in plants. It consists of a lipid bilayer with protein molecules embedded as per fluid Mosaic model proposed by Singer and Nicholson in 1972.
