Biotechnology is application of living organisms and processes for the production of useful substances or effects in the field of medicine, industry and agriculture.

Meaning of Biotechnology

Depending upon the field where biotechnology is used, it can be classified into five fields  vishal
1.Medical biotechnology 
2.Industrial biotechnology 
3.Animal  biotechnology 
4.Environmental  biotechnology 
5. Plant  biotechnology. 
Various techniques are used in these fields to get the desired products.

Scope of Biotechnology

Genetic engineering is introducing a DNA segment of one organism into the DNA of another organism.

Plant tissue culture is growing cells or tissues of plants on a nutrients medium under controlled conditions. 

Cryopreservation is preserving cells,tissues etc at sub zero temperatures like -196 degree Celsius. 

Cloning is producing a new organism from a single parent.

Techniques of Biotechnology

DNA fingerprint technology is used to identify criminals, missing persons,to establish family relationship etc.

Stem cells are unspecialised cells that renew themselves over long periods and can be induced to perform the desired functions. 

Hybridoma is fusion of a tumour cell with an antibody producing cell to produce monoclonal antibodies.

Biotechnology is used in various fields like gene therapy,GM vaccines, production of recombinant gonadotropins, biodiagnostic kits, biosensors, biodigestors etc.
