Overview of the course

This lesson is a summary of Chapter One, of Book 1.

Chapter one is an introductory understanding of India. I have explained a few terms which have been highlighted in the chapter. However, for better understanding, you can look at these concepts and sociologists who have Studies these and have theorised them. (Not necessary that they coined or theorised them. They have explained these concepts and have worked on them.)

Chapter 1: Introducing Indian Society

This is a Course on Demography and India's scenario.

I have explained all the theories and concepts. Even then if you have any doubt just let me know.

The book in its end talks about India's population structure hence it is something you all have to brush through as there is nothing to explain much. It basically applies the concepts and indicators and presents the facts to us. 

Also, please keep in mind, India's demographic dividend currently is high hence there are significant attempts to bring about skill making initiatives  such as Skill India to give employment to the large number of people who are within the cohort of working age group. 

*correction*: the working population is from 15-64 and not 54 as mentioned in the slide, it is a typing error hence just see that.

Chapter 2: The Demographic Structure of Indian Society

This lesson had summarised the notion of Caste as a social Institution in India. The traditional theory of Caste system, the terminology etc. The features have been discussed in detail such as endogamy, division of Labour theory etc.
Then comes the relationship between caste and colonialism. Major scholars like Nicholas Dirks, Herbert Risley have talked about it. If interested, you can read Castes of Mind. 
The post independent India's reforms and changes have also been summed up. If interested you can read Ambedkar's Annihilation of Caste. Jotiba Phule's Slavery. 

Lastly, the theories and concepts of MN Srinivas have been discussed. If interested, you can read his book Social Change in Modern India.

Chapter 3: Social Institutions in India: Continuity and Change Part I (Caste)

This lesson has finished the remaining part of Chapter 3, and talks about tribe (various crucial dimensions) and family/kinship.

The first part focuses on what tribe is, its different categories etc. Then comes the part where different Perspectives of looking at tribal came up. Basically, the isolationists vs integrationists.
The developmental projects and the backlash on tribals have been covered.

Lastly, family, its definitions, types etc have been covered.

If interested, you can read G S Ghurye, Varrier Elwin on tribe. And books on khasi community for understanding matriliny.

Chapter 3: Social Institutions in India: Continuity and Change (Part II-Tribe, family and kinship)

This chapter has focused on the intricacies of a market being a social institution. I have divided the slides into two parts. They are the regional /weekly markets and the global markets in the phase of globalisation. I have incorporated the ideas of different types of market which are state led, mixed and market let.

The idea of capitalism and Karl Marx has been discussed briefly. Since these are big concepts, I shall upload the next video discussing only these concepts in detail because it will create a strong base for your understanding of the Marxist ideologies.

Finally I have discussed the ideas of liberalization vs. The State.

Chapter 4: The Market as a social institution

This is an extension of Chapter 4 video. This briefly explains the key concepts by Karl Marx and its relevance in this capitalist era.

This chapter has briefly discussed the idea of Social inequality and discrimination. It has focused on the prime concepts such as prejudice, stereotype and discrimination. This chapter mainly builds a theoretical understanding of the uolpcomung chapters which shall delve into the space of practical examples from India.

Chapter 5: Patterns of Social inequality and exclusion Part I

This chapter is an extension of the earlier video which focuses on the different dimensions of caste as a discriminatory system. The various important characteristics of untouchability have also been covered. If interested you can read Munshi Premchand's novel Thakur ka kua. You can also watch the marathi movie Fandry which has focused on this obnoxious system of caste system and untouchability.

The latter part has covered the acts and laws which have come up to combat this oppressive system.

Chapter 5: Patterns of Social inequality and exclusion Part II

This video has summarized the remaining part of Chapter 5. It has focused on the case of OBC, Adivasi, women and the differently a led population of India and how they face discrimination in their day to day lives. It has also explained each of these cases in detail.
If interested, you can watch documentaries on the narmada Bachao andolan led by Medha Patkar, read the two books by famous women, and the disability rights conventions in India.

Chapter 5: Patterns of Social inequality and exclusion Part III

This chapter has discussed the diversities and the Challenges that a country faces. It starts with the meaning of community, collective identies and Social cohesion. It discusses the features of what constitutes a communitarian identity and how it is ascriptive and universal in nature. It then moves ahead and goes to discuss the understanding of Nation. It tries to relate it with the idea of State and how it differs from it. The next video will shed better light on this.

Chapter 6: The Challenges of Cultural Diversity Part I

This video extends the previous and delves deeper into the question of State and nation and how they are interconnected. It has focused especially on the interventions of intolerance in the form of assimilation, integration.

If you're a non-political science student, you can go through the Social contract theory and understand the formation or idea of a state in a better way.

Chapter 6 : The Challenges of Cultural Diversity Part II

This video continues with the explanation of Chapter 6. The focus of this chapter was on India. It has looked at the Indian diverse cultural society and has also tried to mark the caveats that India has faced till today. It has tried to see and understand regionalism in detail. The formation of states due to linguistic struggles or tribal social movements. The the model of minority-majority has also been discussed.

Chapter 6 : The Challenges of Cultural Diversity Part III

This video has concluded the chapter on Challenges of Cultural Diversity in India. It has started with the communalism-secularism model. It started with explaining what communalism means. It goes being its theoretical meaning and tries to relate it to the Indian scenario. Not just this but it also describes secularism in detail. It focuses on the parts which talks of different models of secularism. The western and Indian models. It also talks of the process of secularisation and how it differs from the other. Lastly, it discusses the ideas of State and the role of civil society.
