Sartre is famous for the idea that 'Man is condemned to be free' an idea that runs throughout all of his writings. Existentialism is a humanism which refers to the approach emphasizing upon the existence of an individual as a 'Free' and 'Responsible' agent. By making use of this very approach Sartre delivered the lecture with the use of rhetoric to make a case to the public in 1946. He gave provisional responses to the charges labelled against existentialism.

This course describes the phenomenology of spirit which is Hegel's most widely discussed philosophical work and its German title can be translated as either "The Phenomenology of Spirit or The Phenomenology of Mind".
