  6. MONITOR NOISE POLLUTION WITH A SMARTPHONE e Using the method off "community sensing", the process involves a community of phone users to monitor noise levels . The system is based on an app which can detect noise levels and transmit the information to a server and share it on Google Maps in the form of images e Due to public participation, data can be gathered on a real-time basis . Why use smartphones ? * Because they come inbuilt with sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, microphone, GPS etc.


  7. NEW TEST TO DETECT DIABETES-RELATED COMPLICATIONS Researchers at Sastra University (TN) have developeda sensor for measuring levels of a sugar derived substance. This substance is directly responsible for cardiac problems in diabetic patients . What is this substance? * Methylgloxal(MG) . MG is a by-product of glucose metabolism and it is seen in type-I and type-2 diabetes patients


  8. The process of removal of MG from the body is impaired in diabetic people and hence it leads to atherosclerosis, kidney malfunction etc. . MG reduces good cholesterol (HDL) and hence the amount of bad cholesterol LDL) is automatically increased in the body Researchers have developed cost-effective and highly efficient electrochemical sensors for quantifying MG levels, similar to a glucometer This project has been given approval by SERB of DST

J o American and Indian scientists have used recycled ute Golden Fibre of India jute to fabricate high performance and flexible supercapacitors Why Jute . fibrous structure useful for conductivity e easily available . most affordable natural fibre after cotton


  10. . Carbonised Jute has a highly porous structure which allows for more energy storage across a large area . This carbonised jute is in graphitic phase and hence can act as a suitable and sustainable electrode for a supercapacitor Thus it can be used in flexible and high performance energy storage devices e A supercapacitor device made of carbonised jute electrodes has shown 60% improvement in charge es even as high as 75- degree celsius
