About GS1:
- GS1 (Global Standards One) is a not-for-profit international organization that develops and maintains global standards for barcodes and supply chain management.
- Founded in 1973, GS1 is best known for creating the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) encoded in traditional UPC barcodes.
- GS1 operates through local member organizations in over 100 countries, including GS1 India.
- GS1 India was established in 1996 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with support from apex industry bodies like FICCI, CII, ASSOCHAM, and others.
What Are Next-Generation QR Codes?
- QR codes will replace traditional lineal barcodes on product packaging.
- These codes can store much more data, including:
- Batch and expiry details
- Origin and supply chain info
- Sustainability and safety data
- Product certifications and recalls
- Dual-code packaging (QR + barcode) will be used during the transition phase.
Why in News?
- GS1, the global standards organization, has announced that new generation QR codes will go live globally from 2027, aiming to enhance transparency, traceability, and consumer safety.
