What is Beamforming Feedback Information (BFI)?
- BFI is the feedback sent by a device (mobile, laptop, etc.) back to the WiFi router or base station.
- This feedback tells the router:
- Signal strength
- Channel condition
- Best direction to send the beam
- Using BFI, the router adjusts the direction and strength of the WiFi signal for better performance.
How BFI Works
- The WiFi router sends a test signal.
- The phone or laptop measures how the signal changed.
- The device sends this information back as BFI.
- The router uses BFI to focus the signal precisely toward that device.
- This happens continuously during normal WiFi use.
Concerns regarding BFIÂ
- BFI is usually NOT encrypted.
- It is broadcast openly so that the router can adjust the signal quickly.
- Any nearby device with proper tools can listen to this feedback.
How BFI Can Identify People
- When a person walks near a WiFi signal:
- Their body movement changes the signal reflection pattern.
- These changes appear in the BFI signal.
- Every person creates a unique signal pattern, like a digital walking fingerprint.
- AI can study this pattern to:
- Identify the person
- Track their movement over time
